Case Summary
Root Canal
Teeth: 30
Case Description
I had root canal therapy about three weeks ago (still do not have a replacement crown). The tooth hurt for a few days afterwards but was then fine for a few weeks. However, yesterday I noticed some pain in the tooth, and today, I discovered one very sensitive spot on the surface of the gum between teeth 30 and 31 that bleeds when brushed vigorously. There is also a dull pain upon biting down on the tooth a certain way. The pain is not crippling in any way and I have not noted any cold sensitivity. Does this likely mean the root canal has failed or is there another possible cause?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Hello,Usually internal resorption happens when you have an infected nerve. Root canal should resolve the problem unless the resorption is too far gone. Internal resorption can easily be confused with external resorption which has a different cause and often needs to be treated differently. Of course, it''''s impossible to tell without a careful evaluation what it is and what prognosis it has. You should see an endodontist (root canal specialist) for that. As far as pain goes, it should not be any diffferent from a regular root canal therapy meaning you won''''t feel anything during and will have minimal to no discomfort after.Good luck

Hi there, If tooth number 30 has internal resorption, it would be important to figure out what has caused it , before the success rate for the root canal could be estimated. Often times teeth with internal resorption continue to deteriorate, even after root canal. This process may take several years though before the tooth would be lost. You may want to seek a second opinion, before you invest in treating the tooth.I would be happy to see you and evaluate it( I would need Xrays). The consult would be free.Dr Gochman718 359-3555

Seek the advice of an endodontist, root canal specialist. The endodontist has the most experience in treating these problems.
