Broke my molar, might need RCT

Broke my molar, might need RCT
Added: February 06, 2008 - 9:25 AM
By: Patient Email Withheld, Montclair, NY
Need Dentist / Specialist: Yes
Provide Cost Estimate: Yes
X-rays Available: Yes
Case Summary
Exam & Consultation Filling Root Canal Broken Tooth Crown Bridge
Teeth: 30
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: Never had one
Last Cleaning: about 6 years ago
Case Description
I broke about 1/2 to 2/3 of my tooth while chewing a piece of candy. It does not hurt but I think that the root is exposed. Does this mean I need a root canal? How much would that cost without insurance? Would crowning and a bridge be needed to replace the missing tooth parts? Again, what is the estimated cost? Is there a payment plan or other alternatives as I am going to Malaysia and was thinking of getting my teeth fixed there but I will only be there for a 1 1/2 weeks and I understand that a RCT could take up to 3 weeks?

Please advise

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Hi,

Well, You have asked a lot of questions that can only be answered properly after examing the broken tooth.

I will give you some general information, but suggest you make an appointment for a consult BEFORE you travel.

1-from your description of the broken tooth, it sounds likely that you would need either root canal followed by a post and crown- OR an extraction if the tooth is too far decayed.

Costs for molar root canal can range greatly from$600- 1600, depending on who treats it. Most times root canals are completed in 1 or 2 visits.

2- most offices (including mine) have payment plans available. If you have good credit it would be no problem.

Waiting until you get to Malaysia could be a big mistake, as this tooth could become infected very rapidly now that it has broken and the nerve may be exposed.

Why dont you give us a call and set up an appointment as soon as possible?

Dear patient:

The fact that you haven''''t seen a dentist and had your last cleaning six years ago worries me much more than your specific tooth. Neglecting your health in general can lead to too many dental and medical emergencies. Finding a good dentist (a general/cosmetic/family or a Prosthodontist--a specialist in restoration of the mouth) will get you back into proper dental care, with proper recall appointments, maintenance and periodic X-rays. Only then will you be certain that emergencies such as the one you have now, do not happen again. As to the current problem... the best thing to do is to pick a dentist you like, get a proper diagnosis, and if your tooth needs a crown, at least have a provisional (temporary) crown made for your travels. Once that is done, one can decide if a root canal is necessary. If you do, you can at least get it started before you go on your trip. Only by a physical examination can one really tell if your tooth is non-vital and requires root canal therapy. As to the cost, it will vary from general dentists to the speicalists. There are many genral dentists who can perform the treatment you need with reasonble success, unfortunately, there are many who cannot. The only way for you to increase your chances of getting a qualified person is by recommendations of people who you trust. If you can afford the higher fees for the specialist you can be certain that the care that you get is at the highest level with better chances of success.

dear patient,

you go over many items that need attn and discussion, i an help you, i am in practice 24 years and we do work payment plans, if interested pls call monday 201 434 3819 and , although booked all day, i will stay late to help you.

first off...if you never had a full set xrays and your last cleaning was 6 years ago, there is alot of neglect here. the teeth decay and break when not attended to.

secondly...if the tooth broke upon chewing, did you have a filling in it?, it must have had decay inside it which weakened the structure and upon pressure it crumbled. this is common.

3rd...pain is not an indicator of a problem as lack of pain also does not mean something is wrong. when you say the root is exposed, what exactly do you see, without calling it a root?

4th...you need an xray and evaluation to determine the necessary course of tmt,

5th...after the xray and diagnosis we can determine what else the tooth needs,

6th...with out knowing what it needs i cannot give an estimate, first things first..

7th we have great pamt plans for all patients...

8th...why would you get tmt done in malaysia when the best medical/dental care in the world is here in the usa....

pls call if you would like us to help you, it will be our pleasure.
