Case Description
I've just moved back to New York CIty (from London) and do not yet have a primary dentist in place. But I broke my back upper left tooth pretty badly today. I saved the chunk that came out. It doesn't hurt, but feels a bit funny. Is this an emergency? Do I need to see someone on the weekend, and, if so, who do you recommend?
Also, should I go straight to an endodontist or a general dentist? I have delta dental insurance, btw.
Thank you, DW

Are You This Patient?
When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Dear DW, You must have this looked at before you have a swelling. It''''s hard to say what could be done without an xray, but it sounds like a poosible root canal may be necessay to save the tooth, hopefully there''''s no fracture to the root, (If it''''s a wisdom tooth, then it should be removed). I also think you should see a dentist ASAP. Please let me know if you need an appointment. We can fit you in Monday morning if you like. We open at 10 am. Please call over the weekend , leave a message, and we can help you set up an appointment, or just let us know if we can be of any assistance!

If there is no pain or swelling, it is okay to wait a few days. You may not need an endodontist if it isn''''t a nerve issue. I will be able to see you Monday. If you are interested, contact me at 212-983-0233 after9 AM on Monday

HI, The good thing is you have not pain. So it is not an emergency. As far as the tooth is concerned. You have options based on how much is broken. If this indeed is #16 and "badly broken" then extraction may be the best option. But do have it evaluated by a general dentist who can then refer you to the appropriate specialist if need be (endodontist or oral surgeon.) If you feel that this should be looked at today, then feel free to call our office and leave a number. We can accomodate you today if you are willing to travel.Dr. Chhabra

Yes, you have to see a general dentist first even though it might not hurt. The chance of fracturing this tooth even more is high and then it might be difficult or impossible to restore it depending how deep the fracture is. I''''m an orthodontist and do not handle this kind of cases but I can refer you to a very good dentist in Chelsea. You can call him for an appointment, he accepts your insurance. Phone #(212)206-9977, Dr. Galperin.Good luck.Dr. Larissa Davids.

Hello Thank you taking an interest in our office. If you chipped your tooth this can be an emergency depending on the size of the chip. There is no need to go to an endodontist first a general dentist should be able to treat this problem. We would love to have you come in to check up on that tooth before it becomes serious. We do accept delta dental but we are not in network.Hope to see you soonDr. Alexandra Germain212 223 0302
