Sensitivity to pressure after filling

Sensitivity to pressure after filling
Added: February 24, 2009 - 4:48 PM
By: Patient Email Withheld, New York, NY
Need Dentist / Specialist: Yes
Provide Cost Estimate: No
X-rays Available: Yes
Case Summary
Filling
Teeth: 12
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: 2 years ago
Last Cleaning: 2 months ago
Case Description
I had a small filling placed between two teeth 3 months ago (see chart - the filling is between the 4th and the 5th tooth upper left). For the first 10 days, all went fine. However, after that, the tooth bagan to hurt when I bite on food (there was also a limited sensitivity to hot and cold but now it is gone). It does not hurt when I close my mouth and the teeth from my upper and lower jaw touch. I went back to my dentist and she filed down the filling to avoid contact. Now there are no contacts between the filing and the lower teeth.

Should I have my filling replaced or should I wait longer (it has been 3 months already and while the sensitivity diminished, it is still there...).

Thank you for your replies.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

With all the respect: is this a complaint about the wrongness of your dentist or your own choice ? You are the one to choose your dentist and you are the one to complaint.

Are you really assuming that all dentist are born with equal knoledge, manual capabilities & decision making, etc.

Of cource you should change the dentist, the fillings (preferable to a bio compatible) ASAP before you going to end up with Root Canal Treatment .

Good luck with your search.

1)Make sure you are not using a toothpaste with "tartar control"

2)Make sure you can not move your teeth side to side in any direction or close in any way that causes discomfort

3)Don''''t listen to anyone who is horribly negative, most dentists try to do their best & if it still bothers you, ask your dentist again before just jumping ship. The nerve may have been irritated or damaged by the large cavity inside. If it will heal, it may need more treatment or less irritation from a toothpaste, pressure or somne even more complicated factors.

Dear patient:

I hate to say this... but the first responder is right. Go get a second opinion from the person that the American Dental Association recognizes as the expert in the area...the Prosthodontist. Unfortunately, as a patient you are not in position to evaluate your dentist''''s knowledge, experience, or skill. By going to a specialist you are increasing the chance that the person is better trained. Do not neglect this. It will only get worse. All you might require is a proper replacment of the restoration.

Would love to see you in my office. Best wishes,

Hi.

At the end of your email, you mention that "it has been 3 months already and while the sensitivity diminished, it is still there". If this sensitivity is to hot and cold, and if the filling was fairly deep, you may need to have a root canal treatment, as this would indicate an irreversibile inflammation of the nerve. However, if the sensitivity is very slight, you might prefer to have the filling removed, and to replace it with a sedative filling for a period of several weeks; if the tooth feels fine, then you can have a new permanent filling placed. In short, I am concerned that after 3 months you are still experiencing sensitivity.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any further information.

Sincerely,

Deepti Gupta, DDS

Hello,

As one of the responders above have said not all dentists are the same and I believe you should seek a second opinion.

As per your explanation of sensitivity the nerve of the tooth my be compromised. The best course of action would to be reevaluated the two teeth involved and possibly remove this restoration to a new one and hopefully avoid a root canal.

Much Luck,

Dr. Daniel Noor
