Need Dentist / Specialist: No

X-rays Available: No
Case Summary
Bridge
Teeth: 25
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: May 2009
Last Cleaning: May 2009
Case Description
It's been a year since the front center tooth (lower jaw) was removed. I've waited until now to replace it because of pain in the general area -- diagnosed as atypical trigeminal neuralgia. That pain has now laregly abated.

The dentist plans on making a resin-bonded dental bridge, which will have minimal impact on the adjacent teeth since it will simply be bonded to the teeth on either side with a metal band.

Here's my question. I know him to be a fine dentist -- been going to him for more thn 20 years -- but I do believe that his fees are very, very high. Frankly, I can no longer afford them. For this procedure, he's charging me about $2,500 -- and that's with a senior discount. What do you believe is a range of fee for this work? I live on Long Island, and I know charges here are high -- akin to those in New York City. I'm going to go ahead and have it done, but I think I'm going to have to change dentists IF I find that other good dentists in my area would charge appreciably less for this bridge. Please understand that this is just the latest work that I'm having done. His charges for other work -- crowns, for example, are also what I consider very high.

I know that I could join a dental plan, but I don't want to. So can you provide me with some guidance as to the cost of such a bridge?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Fees vary widely in the New York area, but this is not unreasonable at all. If you know him to be a good dentist and a man with integrity and looking out for the best interest of the HEALTH of his patients, then fees should be much less a concern for you.

As the old saying goes ''''you get what you pay for.''''

The fee does sound about right.

The important thing here is not to get it done cheaper but rather to get it done right. Quality of work and thorough diagnosis and treatment planning are what determine success rates.

Failures, in the long run, will end up costing you more.

HOWEVER- there are often several treatment options for tooth replacement that offer a wide range of costs. You might be able to opt for a less expensive treatment option.

I would be happy to see you for a consultation to go over your options, if you''''d like. Consultations are FREE.

The fee quoted $2500 is in line with other practioners.

My recommendation would be to stay with the dentist who has been treating you for years. You trust him and are confident in his abilities. Good labs charge higher fee to dentists for quality work and a good dentist will not cut corners for his patients. Their is an old saying, " you get what you pay for"

Good Luck,
